Vocational Evaluation with Persons having Blindness/Visual Impairment

OBJECTIVES: Participants will

  • Know background considerations for assessment of persons with these conditions.
  • Recognize correct levels of assessment and elements of the vocational evaluation for this population
  • Acquire a beginning list of tools and accommodations for performing these vocational evaluations.

Biography

Curtis Buler is a vocational evaluator at the Workforce and Technology Center in Baltimore, Maryland. He has over 18 years of vocational evaluation experience serving individuals with a broad range of disabilities and is a lead evaluator for persons having blindness or visual impairment. He also serves on a statewide committee that monitors reports of career assessment providers to ensure compliance with Maryland service standards. Mr. Buler was the 2017 recipient of the Paul R. Hoffman Award for innovation and achievement in vocational evaluation.

Sam Castiglione has been a VECAP Board member for five years, and recently was the facilitator of the Interdisciplinary Council on Vocational Evaluation and Assessment. Relevant to this presentation is that he was a school psychologist at the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children for seven years, and has been a vocational evaluator for 23 years, in which he developed lead responsibilities for assessments of persons with blindness or visual impairment.
